Abstract: Accurate pronunciation constitutes a pivotal component in enhancing communicative competence among learners of English as a foreign language. Nonetheless, a considerable number of students continue to encounter challenges due to suboptimal practice methods and the absence of immediate, constructive feedback. This study investigates the efficacy of Google Voice Typing—an automatic speech recognition (ASR) tool—in facilitating pronunciation improvement among English-major undergraduates. Employing a controlled experimental design, the research monitored participants’ pronunciation accuracy through pre- and post-intervention assessments conducted over a four-week training period. The findings reveal substantial improvement, particularly in the articulation of monophthongs, diphthongs, triphthongs, and complex consonant sounds. Despite its benefits, the tool demonstrates limitations, including difficulties in accurately recognizing non-native accents and its inability to provide feedback on prosodic features such as stress and intonation. Accordingly, the study advocates for the integration of ASR technology with informed pedagogical strategies to optimize pronunciation instruction.

Translation is not merely a language conversion for the purpose of communication, but also a process of exchange and mutual dissemination between the two cultures. The Confucian introductory textbook, Guidelines for Children, is highly controversial in contemporary China, but few people actually pay attention to the history of its spreading since the Qing Dynasty until the present. In this context, the article, Historical Origin and Spreading, Process of Guidelines for Children, was chosen by the translator as the source text. Based on the translation practice, the translator adopts the framework of “Comprehension, Expression and adaptation” (CEA) proposed by Professor Li Changshuan to analyse the translation process. There are five parts in the report. Part I is the introduction; Part II is the description of the translation task; Part III introduces the CEA framework; Part IV is the main part—case analysis. Part V summarizes the reflections and enlightenment in the course of completing the task.

Purpose: This study investigates the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) in Somalia, a scourge which has silently consumed the social fabric of the Somali society and Somali women in particular. The study argues for the need to train and recruit professional community social workers and psycho-trauma counsellors to assist survivors of the GBV menace. Methodology: The study conducted a systematic review of select secondary sources on GBV which included reports, book chapters, journal articles and books. These sources were clustered into three main thematic areas: (1) Prevalence of GBV in the Somali society; (2) The cultural burden on GBV survivors; and (3) The need for qualified community social workers and psycho-trauma counsellors to combat GBV. Results: The findings show the social contexts in which GBV occurs, how cultural practices impede GBV interventions, and the need to deploy qualified community social workers and psycho-social counsellors to provide psycho-social support to GBV victims and implement GBV interventions across country. Conclusion: Gender-based violence is national problem which requires a multisectoral approach to combat. State and non-stake actors, religious organizations, non-governmental organizations and the international community need to develop joint interventions to battle GBV in Somalia. There is need for a national GBV policy legislation and effective enforcement of the ensuing laws in order to address the GBV scourge in Somalia.
