This study examines the essential conditions and etiquettes required for Qur’anic interpretation (tafsīr), with particular attention to the Nigerian context, where tafsīr centers proliferate during Ramadan. While these centers play a vital role in promoting Qur’anic literacy, doctrinal correctness, and communal engagement with the scripture, concerns persist regarding the qualifications of some interpreters. Employing an analytical methodology, this article delineates the scholarly prerequisites for interpreters, emphasizing sound belief, detachment from personal whims, reliance on authentic transmissions, mastery of Arabic linguistics, and methodological precision. Additionally, it outlines the ethical and professional etiquettes necessary for interpreters, including sincerity, moral integrity, humility, and respect for scholarly tradition. The study underscores that Qur’anic interpretation is a rigorous scholarly discipline requiring both technical expertise and moral rectitude. By clarifying these standards, this research aims to safeguard the integrity of tafsīr and ensure its alignment with orthodox Islamic scholarship.

The Islamic Penal Code and Sharīʿah Law: Clarifying Misconceptions Through Classical and Contemporary Perspectives
Mushaffa'u Musa
Middle East Journal of Islamic Studies and Culture; 76-83.
https://doi.org/10.36348/mejisc.2025.v05i01.009
Abstract: This paper critically addresses widespread misconceptions among students of Islamic law regarding the Islamic penal code and its relationship with Sharīʿah. By systematically answering seven interrelated questions, the study clarifies whether the penal code contradicts, supplements, or forms an integral part of Islamic law. Beginning with the classical structure of Islamic criminal law—ḥudūd, qiṣāṣ, and taʿzīr—the paper examines Qur’ānic and Hadīth foundations, juristic consensus, and views of leading classical scholars including Imām Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Ibn al-Qayyim. It then transitions to the historical codification of Islamic penal law in modern Muslim states such as Saudi Arabia, Northern Nigeria, and Pakistan, analyzing their legal adaptations and inherent challenges. The study also offers a comparative reflection on the objectives of Islamic criminal justice vis-à-vis modern penal systems. Ultimately, the paper contends that the Islamic penal code is not a rival to Sharīʿah, but a vital component of its moral and legal architecture, aiming to uphold justice, deter harm, and protect societal values.

Arabic language and Islamic culture originated from their original homeland and spread through the Islamic conquests led by the Mujahidun. These conquests prompted many immigrants to leave their ancient desert lives and settle in new regions. The influence of Islam further extended into various parts of Africa, brought by Arab caravans, traders, and scholars. One notable area for this cultural exchange is Nortern Nigeria, particularly the Kngdom of Barno and Hausa land. Among Hausa regions that contributed to the spread of the Arabic language and Islamic culture before the establishment of the Bani Fodiye Islamic reform movement is Zamfara, which formerly known as the Western Katsina region, this essay aims to highlight the significance of Zamfara scholars in promoting the Arabic language and Islamic culture before the Bani Fodiye reform movement. The researchers employ historical and analytical methods to explore the topic, focusing on the following areas: the Zamfara region and the origin of its name; the founding of the city of 'Yandoto; the fall of the Mali Empire and its effect on the establishment of the Arabic and Islamic University of 'Yandoto; the scholars of Zamfara and their contributions to spreading Arabic and Islamic culture before the emergence of the Bani Fodiye reform movement; a conclusion; and the list of references.

Goziyah, Sherin Rani Melawati, Agus Sulaeman, Kim Dong Hoon
Middle East Journal of Islamic Studies and Culture; 89-96.
https://doi.org/10.36348/mejisc.2025.v05i01.011
This study aims to analyze the narrative strategy in the “TikTok poison” content and reveal how the discourse reflects and shapes the ideology of consumerism in the digital era. The approach used is qualitative with the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method of Norman Fairclough's model, which includes three dimensions: text analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. Data were obtained from two TikTok product review videos. The results of the study show that the narrative strategy in the content is formed through persuasive language, attractive visuals, and audio that supports the emotional atmosphere. Creators position themselves as trusted authorities, while audiences tend to show consumptive responses both explicitly and implicitly. The discourse of “TikTok poison” represents the ideology of consumerism formed through popular narratives, digital trends, and impulsive shopping habits. Thus, product review content on TikTok is not only a medium of entertainment, but also a space for the production of discourse that influences the consumer behavior of society, especially the younger generation.

Jinn Possession in Humans: An Islamic Jurisprudential Analysis
Dr. Bawa Dan Muhammad Anka, Mal. Haliru Abdullahi
Middle East Journal of Islamic Studies and Culture; 110-115.
https://doi.org/10.36348/mejisc.2025.v05i01.014
Islamic tradition maintains that Jinn possess supernatural abilities to inhabit humans, animals, and inanimate objects. While certain Muslim sects like the Mu'tazilah and Qadariyah reject this concept, authoritative Islamic sources confirm Jinn's capacity to possess human bodies and manipulate sensory faculties. This phenomenon is linguistically distinguished through two Arabic terms: Lubs al-Jinn (internal possession affecting mental faculties) and Lams al-Jinn (external physical manifestation). The paper examines theological evidences, types of possession (including hereditary cases), symptoms ranging from erratic behavior to reproductive health issues, and Islamic preventive/remedial measures including Qur'anic recitation and Ruqyah therapy. Findings affirm possession as both spiritual reality and medical phenomenon, particularly prevalent among women in Northern Nigeria due to socio-religious factors.
